Goodreads Description:

“Pay close attention and you might solve this.
On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.
Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.
Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.
Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention Simon’s dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose?
Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.

“I don’t know why it’s so hard for people to admit that sometimes they’re just assholes who screw up because they don’t expect to get caught.”

My Thoughts:

I’m not going to lie, I was drew to this book purely because of the red pages. I picked it up in Tesco multiple times on many different occasions before finally buying it. I judged a book by it’s cover, and I’m not even sorry.

Everyone who knows me, knows I love a good Young Adult novel, and knows I love a good murder mystery. And this book was a wonderful mixture of both. It was like Breakfast Club with a twist.

I was hooked on this book from the start. There was something so addictive about it. I think its because the book has so much more to offer than a standard ‘whodunnit’. Personally, I figured it out in the first chapter. The pieces are there for the reader to put together. However, there are plenty of twists and turns before the big reveal that will keep the reader on their toes.

The characters were so fleshed out, grounded and relatable. They were realistic and I really appreciated that while there are some upbeats moments in the story, the ending is messy and real and I welcomed it whole heartedly. People made mistakes beyond the central narrative and there were consequences and some things were left open-ended in a way that makes you wonder what their eventual decisions lead to.

It’s difficult to believe that this is Karen McManus’ debut novel. I can only imagine what amazing things she has in store for us next! It is safe to say that I’m a huge fan now. Because if One of Us Is Lying was a TV series, I would binge watch it. Seriously. It’s that good.

A very well deserved 5 stars. I would highly recommended this book to teens, but I think a lot of adults are going to enjoy this one as well!
